He was brought up in Floral Park, N.Y., graduated from Sewanhaka High School and earned a teaching degree at Buffalo State Teachers College in Buffalo, N.Y., and a master's degree at Columbia University. Prior to beginning his teaching career, Mr. Strub worked at Grumman Aerospace and served in the Navy on a light cruiser in the Pacific during World War II.
In 1947, Mr. Strub moved his family from Floral Park to Mattituck, where he had built a home overlooking Great Peconic Bay. He taught Industrial Arts for one year in Hampton Bays and then accepted the same position at Mattituck High School, where he also served as mechanical drawing and driver education teacher. In 1961 he became a guidance counselor and then served as Mattituck High School's Guidance Director until his retirement 15 years later in June 1976.
Mr. Strub was predeceased by his first wife of 23 years, Sheila Goldsmith Strub Wirsing, on Aug. 3, 1997, and his wife of 37 years, Claire Beatrice Reilly Strub, on Feb. 8, 2005. Forty days later, his only son, Donald George Strub, died on March 19, 2005.
Mr. Strub is survived by daughter Virginia (Gini) Strub Maynard Stype and her husband, Valentine W. Stype, of Riverhead, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Mary Howard Strub of Manchester, N.H.; four grandchildren, Wickham Strub and wife, Traci, of Manchester, N.H., Lucas Strub of Driggs, Idaho, Lisa Maynard of Birmingham, Ala., and Christopher Maynard of Birmingham, Ala.; two great-granddaughters, Ellery Innocent Strub and Margaux Innocent Strub of Manchester, N.H.
As a member of Mattituck Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, Mr. Strub served as Elder, Deacon, Sunday school teacher and volunteer for several of the church's outreach ministries.
The family remembers Vern as a dedicated counselor, helping students with their future career choices, even long after he retired. In 1998, for Vern's 80th birthday, his family spread the word and he received 177 cards and letters from family, friends, former associates and former students expressing not only their birthday greetings, but also recounting fond memories of encounters that they remembered from as long ago as 55 years! He was overwhelmed with the wonderful feelings of having touched so many lives that they would be so kind as to take the time to let him know how they felt.
On July 30, 2008, the family had sent out 150 letters requesting birthday cards and inviting folks to a celebration for Vern's 90th birthday. They were hoping to surpass the number of cards he had received for his 80th! Now, in lieu of those birthday cards, his daughter Gini would love to receive notes from friends explaining what her Dad meant to them.
At the request of the family, donations of any size may be sent to Mattituck Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1411, Mattituck, NY 11952; The Vernon G. Strub Scholarship Fund, c/o Capital One Bank, P.O. Box 1559, Mattituck, NY 11952; or to your favorite charity.
Defriest-Grattan Funeral Home of Mattituck was in charge of arrangements. Burial, with Naval Honors, was at Cutchogue Cemetery, Cutchogue, N.Y.
